Case
Turning Vision Technology into a Strategic Capability
Strategy | Global Company
Business Learning helped a global manufacturer transform fragmented Machine Vision initiatives into a coordinated strategic capability supported by shared governance, a modular platform and a multi-year roadmap.
The client is a global manufacturing company operating seven production sites worldwide. With approximately two-thirds of its product portfolio changing each year, the company depends on highly flexible production, consistent quality assurance and efficient operations to support continued growth.
Challenge
The company wanted to move beyond isolated technology projects and establish Vision Technology as a strategic capability supporting manufacturing excellence.
Several business drivers made this increasingly important:
· Continued production growth
· Growing product complexity
· Labour shortages in selected regions
· Rapid advances in Artificial Intelligence
An initial assessment identified:
· More than 40 business needs where Vision Technology could create value
· More than 20 independent Vision projects running across the organization
· No common governance or strategic prioritization
· Limited sharing of knowledge and solutions across production sites
The challenge was creating alignment across the organization and a software platform that could solve the company-specific challenges.
Approach
Business Learning was engaged to facilitate the development of a company-wide Vision Technology Strategy.
Working closely with executive sponsors, engineering teams, quality and production stakeholders, we combined strategic methodology with manufacturing insight.
The project included:
· Analysis of business needs across the manufacturing value chain
· Assessment of existing Vision initiatives
· Technology trend analysis
· Interviews with more than 15 internal stakeholders
· External dialogue with universities and technology experts
· Executive workshops and strategic decision sessions
· Continuous alignment with the Steering Committee
One important insight emerged during the process.
While camera hardware would continue to evolve, the real competitive advantage would come from software, data, governance and organizational capabilities.
This became a defining principle for the strategy.
Impact
The strategy established a common direction for Vision Technology across the enterprise.
Key recommendations included:
· Establishing a global Vision Competency Center
· Developing a modular Vision platform tailored to the company's manufacturing challenges
· Creating a Community of Practice with local ambassadors at each production site
· Developing a prioritized multi-year technology roadmap
· Defining a new operating model and governance structure for Vision Technology
The strategy was developed collaboratively throughout the process, ensuring strong engagement and ownership across leadership and operational stakeholders.
Following the successful implementation of the Vision Strategy, Business Learning was invited back to support the company's next strategic journey—developing the overall Automation & Robotics Strategy.
